That is a very good demo you have given there and you are entirely correct in saying that larger smileys break up the text formatting (if used in between) while smaller ones do not.
While that is undeniable, I think the reason we use smiley's is not for some practical purpose but for fun. And IMHO small smilies are no fun even if they are "practical" It is difficult to even make out what the smiley is trying to convey.
I would rather use one larger smiley at the end than ten small ones in the text. But as you said its personal preference.
