Icons do show up in the forums but the manage awards section does not reflect that change. It tries to go to http://www.example.com/admincp/xperience/icons/test.png even when I put in xperience/icons/test.png

You cannot use it without the / at the beginning. As you have a subfolder for the forum, you need to specify /subdir/xperience/icons/test.png
Not using / would lead into the current directory, in AdminCP it is /admincp/ ...
