Nevermind. Found the answer. Center the background - duh.

When you design a page like vBulletin.org, the content panel has a fixed width and is surrounded by a gradient with a fixed width.

When you do this, do you create a fixed size for all resolutions or do you determine the screen width and select a size on the content panel and the gradient background depending on it?

Or do you go with a single fixed size? I noticed they do that here when I change screen resolution, but I'm wondering about the best approach. The larger the resolution you use, the smaller it looks, and quite frankly, it does look really small sometimes, like it's crowded by the surrounding background.
