1. To prevent searching of common words, Admin CP -> vBulletin Settings -> Message Searching Options

From here set the Search Index Minimum Word Length (3 or less generally covers most common words) and Words to be excluded from search as needed.

2. Not really sure, but I believe the "." are filtered out by default as they're considered operators IIRC.
