IE8 is doing quite well, even surpassing Firefox in usability. Not to mention, being an integral part of the OS, it's quite a bit more responsive.

IE8 != IE7
It's that simple. The reason sites "enhanced" (read: intentionally broken) for IE7 or lower don't work on IE8 is because IE8 actually
works. Many sites are just looking for the "IE" useragent string and then malforming their pages to make IE7 or lower render them correctly. This is wrong. They should
not be applying these "enhancements" to IE8, as it handles the web just as well as Firefox or Chrome. (Although Chrome's usability is still in question, but that's another topic.)
