See the "Maximum Cutoff Limit" setting in the options ;

Sets the maximum number of days that posts will be counted for, if the cutoff exceeds this then just an unread posts link will be displayed. This can save running large sql queries if members have not visited in a long time. Set to zero to disable this feature.
