Ya know, to people who smoke cigarettes, at least all you have to worry about is a tax. What about non-violent medical cannabis consumers, or even just casual consumers, who have to worry about jail time? That's another debate for another day, though.

On a socio-economic status, I agree with the heavy taxation of cigarettes. It really sucks, but every US citizen has to sacrifice something in order to live here. Cigarettes are not a necessity, because it is possible to live without them. Plus, they've been proven to caused a myriad of illnesses. Sooo... in the interest of public health and economic welfare, why not make the luxury that kills expensive? Sounds like smart politics to me.
