1) See what group? If it is a publically joinable group they are a member of, it will show on their member.php page. If they joined a group, they would also see their usergroups under User CP > Group Memberships. If they are not a member of any other group, nothing will show up there. (The best thing to do is to play with this on a test site and see how it works.)

2) In permissions, a Yes will override a No. So, you may add permissions through other usergroups, but not take them away. Go verify that the users are in fact a member of these other usergroups.
