Righto.... based on feedback I undid all the edits, removed the files and uninstalled the product. (bummer, cos over 100 facebook registrants who'll have to re-register)

Re-installed again from scratch and happy to report this is now working. I'm going to look into providing:-

Wall post when user posts a blog
Wall post when user comments on a blog
Notification when someone makes a profile comment
Notification when someone comments on one of your blogs
Ability to provide *per user* options for enable / disable notifications and feeds

Does anyone else have any other suggestions for improvement of this mod?

EDIT: I managed to restore access to all 100+ FB users by reconstructing the fbuser table - this was easy by inspecting FB proxy email addresses on the accounts for their FB ID
