OK - I finally figured it out.
When creating a new channel, for instance, the Advice channel, you would refer to the image thus: mgc_cb_evo_advice (where "advice" is your unique file name).
However, you need to create two different versions of your icon, one is sharp (the sel version of the image) and the other is fuzzy (the nosel version).
You will need to name the two images thus:
mgc_cb_evo_advice_sel.gif
mgc_cb_evo_advice_nosel.gif
....then upload those two images to the channels directory.

Well if you look closely it's stated that the extension, _sel and _nosel are not to be inputed !!!
The mgc_cb_evo prefix is not mandatory at all !!
You just have to put everything in the name of your image before the _sel.gif or _nosel.gif or _new.gif, that's all.
