I'm about as good with template edits as a random HTML hack with firebug can be.

AKA, not very good.
The hack you linked to isn't really what I need...

Basically, something like this, but that differentiates a bit more; like one part of the forum which can have their own default style and look different from the other... and preferably not with AJAX, but normal linking.
