You should volunteer at an animal rescue. You'd be surprised at the number of people that just give up purebred dogs and cats, even after spending a lot of money on them. The larger the animal, the more likelihood increases that it will be abandoned. The same concept applies to people who buy rabbits and ducks for their kids on Easter than abandon them later because they are too much work. People do it with purebred dogs as well. To most people, animals are a possession to show off like cars and televisions not pets or family members. My wife has gone to work in the morning and found purebred dogs tied to the fence at her rescue. The animals are left with their food bowls, vet histories and pedigrees. The motto at her work is everything gets a home. If someone kills even a rattlesnake or scorpion on the property, they lose their job.
I doubt this is the case here but most likely just another abandoned dog that got ill eating garbage or whatever else was handy until it was found.
