Have a look around what task you have running when it spikes, it might also be worth putting the no plugins setting into config.php when it is spiking to see if it kills the spike. If it is then the problem is with a mod.

What sort of caching are you using?

It's weird. only one task that runs at 3:00am everyday. Cache is default.

I forgot to mention also, when the User threashold time limit is up, they all leave. Thats how I know they are not moving around. The IP address span the whole world, but mostly America. That is the biggest worry I have, every single one of them has a unique IP address. Not one of IP's was used by any of my members, and no proxies.
Sometimes they come 2 and 3 times. for an example, 2300 guests will come at 1:31pm and leave at 2:31pm.

Usually they're good, but they can be nasty buggers at times.

I've witnessed that Yahoo spiders like to travel in swarms, among others.

Thats a problem to. I have a hack that shows all the spiders. They never show up as such.
Everyone has differn't IP address's which include valid hostipals, schools, companies, etc.
