There are two different things you can do. You could show those images in line as is - vboptions > message attachment options > View Attached Images Inline > Yes. Or for thumbnails, vboptions > message attachment options > thumbnail creation > yes and then do as it says "If you change this setting, you will need to go to Maintenance -> Update Counters -> Rebuild Attachment Thumbnails."
