I heard from another site manager that many spam-bots that register spammers on forums can defeat the image verification that uses the image with the little letters that the user has to type in. I was using that type of image verification.
At this other manager's suggestion, I changed to user verification by question and answer. I made up a dozen questions that anyone who comes to my site will easilly know the answers to. Since then, I have had zero spammer registrations in the last month.
So you might try that. You could use simple questions like "what is 2 + 2" or something, or make up questions that your site visitors will all know the answers to. It has totally worked for my site.

I too just switched over to the Q&A registration verification system after being hit hard by the spambots. Since switching over not one successful registration by a spambot.
