Those all have the potential of being different time periods.

Last 24 hours is self-explanatory
Visited the forum today - that is since midnight server time
Most online in one day - that is a 24 hour period but different than the Last 24 hours and it's a full day.

In about an hour, it will still be Oct 18 for me. My server will already have total stats for Oct 18 for me since it is on EST (I'm PST) and will be starting to count users for 'today' in my usercp even though it is for it's today, not my today. My today would have several thousand users, it's today will only have a hundred or so. When you talk about 'todays' you need to consider from who's point of view.
