For my purposes, the cuteness of karma points is irrelevant to me. What I want is in many ways opposite of what I have now read more closely on overgrow.com -- where they state it is less about the content of any given post and more about a "niceness" and reciprocation style of the user, in general. (That's oversimplifying it).
I'm much more interested in a tool that enables users to rate the usefullness (to them) of the content of the posts, independent of whether you like anything about the author himself/herself. Obvious restrictions against multiple voting, voting for self, etc.
Formulas, thresholds etc for tabulating & displaying of rating results need to have a relevance beyond simply "if there are 10 votes, display results as an average". I'm not a coder so I cannot define those requirements.
My real intent is to enable filtration in three principal ways:
(1) Browse Mode: whatever graphical display system is chosen to communicate ratings (stars are good), users can scan thread lists, member lists, search return lists, etc and easily see these displays, much like exists already for thread ratings.
(2) Targeted filtration: Posters who have negative ratings are good candidates for "ignore" lists
(3) Filtered browse: "show me only posts/threads that have a minimum threshold of x rating"
Edit: Oh yes, I want to be able to filter out annoying Guests, not just Registered users. Thus, the unreliable IP checking... But maybe someone knows a way of handling this.
