vb.org Archive - View Single Post - Question about vbadvanced?

I currently have vbulletin and wanted to have a "homepage" using vbadvanced that would show statistics and news and such kinda like this site for example:

http://www.pdaphonehome.com/

I was told by my hosting company that I would need vbPortal. Since I'm really new to this, I was wondering if someone could tell me if this is true. Does vbadvanced work without vbportal?
