Perhaps your version of PHP wasn't compiled with mySQLi support?

Check your phpinfo to see if mySQLi is listed there.

If not, you will need to recompile PHP and add

--with-mysqli=/path/to/mysql_config

to your configure command. Just specify the correct path to where mysql_config is on your system.
