I couldn't agree with you more.

You could always intergrate the login form, private messages, notification messages into the header area (I'm sure there is plenty of tutorials on how to accomplish this) and i've seen it done many times. That alone is going to shave off a large proportion of the height.

Ps. Vb.org have done this and you can view how it looks and by also logging out.
