Double check you're setting again. (Disable any modifications temporarily too).

It is trying to create a thumbnail by the look of it and you don't have the required PHP extensions for it, so it obviously failing. However disabling the thumbnail creation should have stopped the error.

Edit: I just tried this on my test board and even with the "Display thumbnail" set to yes I was still able to upload.
