There were midnight shows here, as well, and we wanted to go really badly, but with my husband's work obligations, it just wasn't possible.
I agree with what you said about the role not being oscar-worthy...seems preposterous to me.
Now, a question: would Ledger's performance still be considered oscar-worthy if he wasn't dead? I really believe his death has a lot, if not everything, to do with it.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not discounting his skill or talent, but seriously, how many times has a Batman movie been considered, much less nominated, for the Oscars? The only other mention I could find was a nomination for Best Cinematography for Batman Begins.
I'm not the only one questioning it, read here.
