Way to show number of subforums in each forum? $forum[subforums] ???

I am working on a design for my forum and wanted to know if there is a way to show the number of subforums within a forum?

For example, on the index page we see the total number of threads and total replies within each forum using $forum[threadcount] for threads and $forum[replycount] for posts/replies...

What do I use for total subforum count?
