My own designs for personal use tend to be on the dark side. I just find it easier on my eyes. Darker styles tend to better suited to hobbyist sites like gaming and automobiles (or for musicians, like my site in my signature, which I designed with glossy black grand pianos and Les Pauls in mind).

It's all personal preference, though. Despite my own preference, I think most people find dark text on a light background easier on their eyes.

There is plenty of room in the middle ground, however. Neutral colors with mid-tone brightness levels work well, and can satisfy lovers of both dark and light themes.
