It sounds to me like you are using a custom Navbar template and it cant find "$template_hook[navbar_buttons_left]" in the template so it cant install the Automatic Template Edit.

In your navbar template, find where you want to place the HelpCenter link and paste the following:

<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="helpcenter.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[helpcenter]</a></td>
