This is my very hacky approach with 3.6.8... create a new secondary usergroup called "Globally ignored" or similar... then edit the postbit you use so that it shows posts normally if they're by people not in that group (or if the person viewing is in the group but seeing one of their own posts) and shows a template roughly equivalent to postbit_ignore_global if not.

In the example given, there's deliberately no "view post" link for non-moderators, but you can take that extra conditional out easily. And I should note that we change postbit_legacy in other ways, so put your own postbit between <else /> and </if>.

(People who are better at coding than me, feel free to explain why this approach is a bad idea... it's the first time I've really used conditionals, and I thought this up about an hour ago...)

edit: And obviously stick your secondary usergroup number into the top line, rather than 17.
