i think the page compression is from HELLCATs Realtime Page Compressor that i have installed.

anyways, i fixed the problem. not sure how. as i said, nothing was changed to begin with. i disabled and enabled the menu control hack - that didn't seem to do anything, so i went into the menu control options, didn't change anything, but just clicked 'save', and bam, it's fixed.
