That is how half of the authors will work. They will wait until there is a stable version before modifying their work. Like this they will not need to do double work if there are changes (which is likely during beta stages).

in fact i imagine there is more likeliness in some of the developers here having experience on how long the beta testing normally takes on a release and then how long the RC stage hasw been in the past.
someone has said it will certainly be this year - this is not obvious for someone who hasnt been through the dev cycle before.
does anyone else have any rough estimates as to when you would think the release candidate stage might start and how long that has lasted for in the past?

No there is not as much point in asking here and vB.com (or actually there is as much as you won't get any additional information on either site). You will not find any of the developers or decission makers on vB.org. They do their work on vB.com and any announcement will be made there. Nobody on Staff (either here on vB.org or vB.com) will provide any information or estimates other then what is announced, doing so would even break our non-disclosure agreement which has been signed by all Jelsoft staff.
Others can not give any meaningfull estimate. Also the duration of a Beta/RC/Production can not be made based on historical data as it depends greatly on the number of new features added and customer feedback/bugreports. Keep an eye on the bugreports and once there are only a few (serious) bugs reported on a Beta version, the development will go into the next stage (ie. RC.)
