Add a new subscription, and have the members who subscribe get promoted to this new usergroup.
Create or download some sort of badge or "Rank Image" for these members and assign this image to the group using the built in User Rank Manager.

You might want to give members of this usergroup a special color for their usernames as well.

Rank image and username color will show up on their posts and the rank image will show up on their profile.

All good suggestions. I have implemented all of this now using standard vb features. Glad to know I was able to do it without a plugin! I even added a small icon using the html markup feature in the usergroup manager.
