Greek76, I found that 768mb VPS helped bridge the gap from having 20 users online to 50 users. 256 was not workable at all and even 512 started to crash under my max load. If it's 512mb and burstable to 756 you'll probably be okay for a while. Try to find someone that will let you upgade your VPS easily to at least 768MB.
I used A Small Orange for VPS and was not happy. They're shared hosting is excellent but their VPS was too limited for the price. Now I'm on a dedicated box at Liquid Web and couldn't be happier. Their support is excellent and I have so much more power than I need. It leads to a lot of peace of mind.
