I wasn't very happy with any of the current vBulletin AJAX Chat mods listed on here but I did manage to find this one, which contains partial vB integration (not listed here, that I can see):

However I've no idea how to implement the "online users" code and the author suggested I ask on a vB site. The code itself is listed here:
