If you decide to use your 'new' database, you will have to go through the install process again. The install process adds some new tables and columns (usually).

I always do an upgrade on my test board first. Then, I export my mods and styles and go and upgrade my mainsite. After the upgrade on the main site, I import my styles and mods since I have already gone through and 'fixed' those for my board.
