It wouldn't affect sales...you'd still have to purchase a license for each domain regardless of which db tables it used

You may want to instead consider creating a custom script which will instead add the User to all the forums that you want with just a single script. Again it would also involve some work especially with cookies and that, I'm not to sure about those. However it may be easier then editing the core vB files.
