Default Help with ID'ing background and border issue

Hey guys, a total noob here at modifying styles. I've been working through the CSS setup trying to tune the default vb style with a new color scheme.

I know in certain areas, it is the background you see between cells or areas in addition to the border set on certain elements.

I'm trying to track down the settings causing two different things I don't like.

First problem, on the menu seen in the WYSIWYG editor, the border is very thick for the pop-up window used for smiles, etc. I do not see this same heavy border when I use, say the drop-down from the quick-links menu in the navbar. What settings are contributing to this extra thick border?

The second problem is dealing with borders again but differing between the forum view and the thread view.

When I look at a list of threads, it appears this way.. to my liking

But in the view showing the thread itself

The borders are extra heavy and thick between the options in the green bar and the bar below it.

Any pointers to which specific settings would cause this? I'm struggling to ID the difference between border elements, when backgrounds are responsible, and trying to keep the variables straight on who applies where. I've been using the color map reference from the vb manual to get this far.. but looking for some tips.

Thx!
