there is no need to modify the permissions of the sub folders as long as they are already there, that would indicate that the main folder already has 777 access if it wrote a sub folder.

When you move a site and can't do a proper restore and use FTP, then they do NOT get chmod at all, you have to do it yourself, I know cause I've moved many, many, many forums in the past with just ftp, I have to go into the attachments folder and chmod all the ones inside, manually.
