I figured it out...she belonged to additional usergroups who did not have permission for fave smilies. She could see them but not use them, or any smiley features at all. Interesting. I removed her from the other usergroups and problem solved.

Hope this might help someone else.

Also, I wanted to make a donation to the developer, but don't see any links to do so?
