The trick isn't learning the language, it's learning how to respond to the language;

"No you're not fat"
"You look great!" (don't say "fine" here, sometimes "Fine" is worse than "ugly" ).
"Of course you're right"
"I'm sorry" (make sure you know what you're sorry for, if you don't a best guess is alright if you guess right but worse than not knowing if you guess wrong. ).
"I like burned x" (x = whatever she cooked).
