Carrying a lighter is like carrying a pocket knife/multi-tool, you may never need it but some day you might find yourself in need of fire wood and a flame to start it with.

The only modification I do to my Bics is removal of the child safety device. Sometimes I'll turn the cheapo lighters into "crack flames" by taking them apart and turning the gas release all the way up. That's great fun until you go too high and the plastic starts to melt.
