Someone registered at my site and in 2 days time managed to PM at least a couple of hundred users with spam before we caught it. It appeared that he was doing it manually too, the tenacity of some people! I had to create a new group and make it so users have to have at least xx many posts before they can PM. With email notifications on we had twice as many users on as normal too and I am sure a lot of them weren't too happy about it.
