These are most likely not duplicate names, but names that 'look-alike'. What probably happened is that someone signed up with a username that contains characters outside the regular ASCII table, but which when shown on a page look similar. If you would inspect the data directly in the database, you will probably see this. There are a few threads on vb.com that describe this and provide possible solutions to prevent it.
