If you are worried about losing your whole forum backup your whole forum - The main things that will be gone when you upgrade is the image folder, you should not overwrite this file when you upgrade. I made that mistake and I had upload my backed up image folder. Also, be sure to back up the xml in your include's folder, you will have to re-upload that as well.

Other than the thing things that I mentioned the upgrade went really smoothly for me. I had a lot of mods as well as template changes. The template's code is in the database so when you overwrite your files, they will ask you revert them after upgrading. (You can refuse to revert of course)
