The arrow appears when you replied in the thread (ie. posted). I think it's usefull if the arrow button also appears when you thanked a post in a thread but didn't post a reply (thanked only). On my board the thanks kinda replaces the reply system as a meaning of showing appreciation.

I tried but can't. Unless there was a poll, then the thread was not getting marked read.
