VPS is STILL considered as shared virtual private hosting so it's not really a good idea to go for. I never ever had such big issues while I was on shared hosting until I've moved to VPS. I highly recommend you to get any of the dedicated plans by Liquid Web. At least, that's where I got my dedicated a couple of days ago and I gotta say that I'm really impressed with the change so far. Your forum is definitely huge as it is already so you must get a dedicated one. The webmaster series will do just fine. ;]

Snake took the words right out of my mouth.
When my forum got too busy for shared, I went to VPS, and didn't last too too long there, either.
I bounced around from dedicated host to dedicated host, and landed at Liquid Web a few months ago.
THRILLED, THRILLED, THRILLED.
When you have a problem, you just pick up the phone, and there's someone there to take your call who can generally fix the problem while you're on the line.
Go with VPS if your site 'growth' is slow, but if you're growing at even a moderate pace, you'll outgrow a VPS in short order and end up looking for a dedicated solution.
In the meantime...run, don't walk, to Liquid Web.
(Btw, I found them after noticing another 'big board' that was running [smoothly]. they were using Liquid web)
