Interesting Feature to Encourage Less Lurking and More Signups, How Do I Implement It

I was browsing another forum, and was intrigued by a cool feature I had never seen before. They have it set up so that guests can read the first post of every thread, and then after the first post is a "you must login to continue reading this thread" graphic.

How could I go about adding a similar feature?
