I guess some of it depends on the style you use. Not all the code is located in the same place. And trying to do this with a product doesn't work perfectly, not without template edits. One of the biggest issues is the last post column. Depending on the length of the last post, that can throw it all out of whack. You can control the length of the last post info in the admin cp. But you won't need to do that if you set a fixed width for that column.
What I did was remove the threads and posts columns and added a fixed width to the last post column. But, most won't want to remove those 2 columns.
