Ideally "a more userfriendly solution" would be the way to go but "two sets of registration templates" is a start and better than nothing as I'm sure it'll be a lot better than the current setup of fields 'lumped together' (only seperation is required and optional firlds) which can be very confusing for users and just off putting.

Breaking it down over a few pages and grouping 'like minded fields' together is definitely a step in the right direction.
