Default Content Management, best way to go?

I am starting a new website of which the main focus will be the community part, but there will also be a content part, and I am looking for suggestions on how to achieve this in the best possible way.

My original plan was to go with Drupal and integrate it, since I like how well it can be integrated, and it is quite scalable. Unfortunately, after trying it out for some time, I have decided it would be a serious overkill for what I am trying to do, and most of the options that I hope to utilize at some point which Drupal offers, can also be achieved through modifications available here at vB.org.

Basically, what's important to me is that I am able to create a frontpage that's easily manageable with content and news. I have pondered about WordPress integration (since I love WP and use it for all my blogging needs), but I have decided that it would make the content and the community too seperated.

So what do you think would be the best way to go/modification to use? A good example of what I'm looking for would be AbsolutePunk.net (fantastic site, btw).

Thanks in advance for suggestions

I've looked around a bit, and I remember a year ago or so I used something similar to what AbsolutePunk.net has, that would let me post in a certain forum, and it would show up on the main page etc.

I was under the impression that this was vBadvanced, but I installed vBadvanced and it seems this works in a completely different way. Anyone care to enlighten me about what I'm looking for exactly?
