Obvious things like using a modification like vBSEO aside (which I've never really been sold on), I believe it is important to keep your forum as "clean" as you can. By that I mean, don't install more hacks and features than you need, which can hurt your keyword density and, in the case of many modifications, seriously break XHTML compliancethough I realize that how much effect this has is open to debate in SEO circles.

Aside from that, I turn on the forum description, and use <h1> tags around the final navbit element.
