Just to confirm the details before I start dropping and adding rights..
Users are automatically moved into the auto created groups of:
[Edit] Registered Users
[Edit] Unregistered / Not Logged In
[Edit] Users Awaiting Email Confirmation
And I need to add a new group called Registered Users - Greater then x posts
I would guess it is advised not to change the permissions for awaiting email confirmation so they can post in an introductions forum since that opens up bots/spammers
Can the permissions for someone to move out of Users Awaiting Email Confirmation be changed so that they go to a group Registered Users - 0 posts
Then add a promotion from there to Registered Users?
That would seem to make the defaults rights management easier to handle and explain to a new forum staff
Well was very easy to do, but since it seems to be asked often, I thought I would right up my notes a little cleaner. Enjoy
Grant a user rights to post after making an Introduction post
This lets a new user only post in an Introductions forum. After making a first post in the introductions forum, they will be able to post in other forums. This may or may not work for your community, but it is one method to fight lurkers who visit the site, make an account, and then never post. Combined with hacks and plug ins such as Welcome headers, it can help build the communities bonds to one another.
Also, this gives your existing members a quick place to see who is joining and encourage a warm welcome. The more people post, the more they post later.
This does not stop spam or bots - They can get errors on forum access and still walk your forums. Other controls to fight spammers and bots need to address that problem.
Step by Step Instructions
- Log onto your forums
- On the bottom of your forums page click the link for the Admin, AdminCP, or Admin Control Panel
- Log into your admin control panel
- In the Admin Control Panel
- Usergroups
- Create group Registered Users - 1 post or more (or whatever you are going to call it)
- Create a promotion to move users from Registred Users to Registered Users - 1 post or more
- Forums & Moderators
- Add a new forum
- Create a Forum called Introductions (or something clever)
- Forum permissions
- On every parent forum or category, edit the Registered Users permissions and remove their ability to post, reply, edit, delete - anything but read and search
- NOTE: The color coding for permissions inheritance makes it easy to see this is flowing down properly
- On the Introductions forum, allow Registered Users to post but not reply to a thread
- Edit the permissions for Registered Users - 1 post or more so they can post, edit, reply, polls, etc on your forums
- Use this role as your new baseline for security rights for all users.
I should take 5 minutes and grab some screen shots of this. If this is already in an FAQ and me and the other threads on this keep missing it, let me know. If this can be of use, I will gladly finish it up with some screen shots and make it more visual and spelled out step by step.
Thanks for all the help in the forums here
