I use vBadvanced and I have it set up so that my pages are the custom content used by vBadvanced. Then, I am able to create custom modules based on usergroups so different usergroups have different experiences.

With my latest project I am going to try a different mechanism by editing the templates to create a right hand column where I can add custom content. I have not got real far with this site yet but with a few conditionals I can do the same thing as I am doing with vBadvanced on the other sites:
